What to Pack: Elevated Seattle Wardrobe

Empty your bag and prepare for your elevated Seattle wardrobe!

What to Pack is a series of blog posts to help you decide what you need or want to bring for a trip to a certain location. I will give you suggestions based off of the time of year that I went, the activities that I did, how to not look like a tourist, and fashionable options for the items I suggest.

Keep in mind: I went to Seattle during the month of November so this post is focused primarily on that time of year! The weather wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be (not that much rain) with decent temperatures, so I packed my fall clothes. I did a lot of walking around and some light outdoor activities (mostly kayaking).

A rain jacket

During my trip, it wasn’t as rainy as people like to say about Seattle, so this wasn’t a huge concern. I actually didn’t even pack one! But looking back, if I had thought it through more, this should’ve been one of the first things on my list. I went during the month of November, so a light rain jacket will do with the ability to wear a sweater underneath.

One thing I learned from the locals is that the perfect way to look like a tourist is to carry an umbrella! So unless this is your goal or it’s unrealistic for you not to have one, plan to gear up with a rain jacket instead.

Worn in sneakers

You’ll be doing a lot of walking around Pike Place Market and the city if you want to get the full experience, and tennis shoes will fit in just fine here! Only wear your white ones if you’re okay with them getting dirty, because it will rain at least once during your trip!

Waterproof boots

On that note, might be a good idea to sneak in a pair of cute, waterproof boots. I don’t think it’s necessary for these to be rain boots unless you want them to be.

A hat

The wind can get a little nippy, so I’d invest in a warm beanie if you don’t already have one. If beanies aren’t your thing, at least bring a ball cap to block out the rain.

A cute, chunky sweater

A turtleneck

Never underestimate a fitted turtleneck. TBH, I completely hated turtlenecks and still can’t do ones that strangle me. But the right one will keep you cozy in the cold and they’re perfect for fall!

A light jacket

It’s fall! Which means it’s the perfect time to try out all of the cute lightweight jackets you see everyone wearing during this season. I personally brought a lined jean jacket and a wool blend coat.

Jeans

Unless you’re headed to an event or fancy dinner, jeans will do in this city. If you really feel uncomfortable wearing jeans, trade in your blue jeans for black. That’ll immediately play up any look.

Warm Socks

This is not the time to cheap out on socks. Get a pair of warm, wool socks for the fall and winter months. Not only will you stay warm, but these socks match the Seattle vibe.

Don’t forget extra socks! The last thing you want is to be wearing wet socks all day.
