Short Story: A Petite Styling Experience

Short Story – a petite styling subscription box – is exactly that: an experience, a story through clothes.

As most of us know, clothing companies aim to fit a specific demographic that a lot of us just don’t fit into (and we shouldn’t!). How frustrating is it to try our 5th pair of pants on only to know they aren’t going to fit right?

Short Story solves that problem by giving us shorties clothes that fit properly and with it, the ability to embrace all of who we are!

When I first heard of Short Story, I was a little skeptical as I always am of clothing subscription boxes. How can they really get it right when they’ve never seen you in person? But hearing that they’re a petite specific, entirely women based team with a dedication to expanding the fashion industry (and the tiny demographic it serves), I was willing to give it a try!

How it works

For a small fee, you pay a stylist to pick out a set of clothes each month that fit your taste and most importantly, fit petite women (and ladies we will discuss the truth of what that means later on).

You start by filling out a short quiz on their website that gets into the nitty gritty details of what you’re looking for, what you normally wear, if you’re adventurous in your style or minimalistic, and linking any social that you want to help them see what your style typically is. They also show you a set of styles from edgy to preppy and have you rank them based on how much you love or hate them. You’ll then give them some info on your measurements.

When the box arrives, you filter through to keep what you like and either return or exchange the items that didn’t work for the perfect fit!

Short Story also includes the prices of all items so you can decide what works best for your budget.

The truth about “petite

Most people think that petite means small in stature or “tiny” because of the way it’s used in society. While that’s partially true, the term petite in clothing is actually referring to the length of clothing, not the size. Petite sizes, including those offered at Short Story, cover XS-XL but the lengths are tailored to women of 5’4” and below!

Now, that’s not to say that many petite companies don’t exclude curvier or bustier women. From my experience, this often seems to be the case. I was nervous that my Short Story box would arrive with the same issues but all of the pieces fit – one was even too big!

AND, probably the best part, waiting inside my box was a pair of dark wash high rise skinny’s made for curvy women. Now that’s a win!

Little details Short Story gets right

These all came as a surprise to me but ended up being my favorite details about the company, which is what puts it a step up above the rest, in my opinion.

The things that I loved to see in my box:

  • A personalized brochure detailing the contents of my box, why they picked those items for me and even how to style them!
  • The prices and description of each item
  • A prepaid return label to exchange or return anything that I don’t want to keep. So many companies these days make you pay for shipping which is totally ridiculous in my opinion!
  • Measuring tape and a body chart to fill out your measurements so they get every inch right on your next box

My Overall Experience with Short Story

I am amazed.  My favorite part was opening my box to find my personalized brochure and realizing that they truly pay attention to what my style is! This team is full of genuine people that know what they’re doing.
